I think that Kevyn Aucoin may have always corrected for oily skins… period. Every base that I’ve ever used from him does wonders on my oily skin, even the notoriously tacky (in feeling, not opinion) Sensual Skin Enhancer. The Sensual Skin Tinted Balm is no exception:
This formula imitates skin in the most wondrous way… and it doesn’t look ‘filmy’ on the skin like some tinted moisturizers can tend to do. The sheer coverage can be built to medium, much like NARS Radiant Tinted Moisturzer. In terms of comparison… I can’t really. The finishes are completely different. NARS acts and behaves like a really creamy foundation, while the KA Tinted Balm behaves more like a traditional tinted moisturizer. The KA version is best suited to Normal/Oily types while the NARS version works best on Combination/Dry skin types.
I test-drove it in a recent FOTD:
I will say that NARS edges out KA on the color selection… you’d be hard pressed to find the one (two?) shade that goes darker than this one (SB05). KA might want to think about giving these formulas some ‘names’ too, instead of numbers. Makes it much easier to track your individual color. Even Armani got the memo on that one and started naming the lipsticks. Much easier that way.

I just refuse to fight the weather these days. It’s been super hot, and my oily skin won’t really tolerate much in terms of foundations. I’ve put away my matte finishes (for now) and as long as I keep the applications sheer, it works out. For this look, I used the new YSL Pure Chromatics Palette in #7:
Rock & Republic Tinted Illuminizer in Roxanne
NARS Pure Radiance Tinted Moisturizer in Malaga
NARS Blush in Luster
YSL Pure Chromatics Palette #7:
Orange on inner lids
Pink on center lids
Burgundy on outer lids, blended through crease and under outer waterline
Mac Eyedshadow in Handwritten smudged into lashline
Chanel Eye Pencil in Peche Cuivre on waterline and under inner waterline
NARS Lip Pencil in Rosebud (all over)
YSL Golden Gloss in #51
I was feeling a little ‘seasonal’ (the mornings have been very overcast) and decided to play with ‘muted’ colors for the day…
Rock & Republic Tinted Illuminizer (Roxanne)
29 Hydrating Foundation (Dark)
Kevyn Aucoin Diaphonous Radiance Powder
Armani Blushing Fabric in Sienna
Louise Young Eyeshadow in Maowi & Blackbear (brows)
Guerlain Ombre Cream Shadow in 03 (crease)
Armani Eyes To Kill Silk Eyeshadow in #6 (lids/under waterline)
Guerlain Kohl in Black Fakir (lashline/waterline)
MAC False Lashes Mascara
Naimies Half Lashes
Chanel Rouge Allure Gloss in Insouciance
I was inspired by Tamara (www.beautythesis.com) to do something with teal. Although I missed the day to properly show my support for the cause, I still wanted to do a little something.
Rock & Republic Tinted Illuminizer in Roxanne
DiorSkin NUDE Foundation (5.1)
Chanel Blush in Rose Ecrin
Chanel Loose Powder (Dore)
NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk (lashline to brow)
MAC Eyeshadow in Brule (lashline to brow)
MAC Eyeshadow in Soft Brown (crease)
Kat Von D Eyeliner in Trooper (lashline)
Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in #5 (Diamond Turquoise Blue) (lashline)
NARS Eye Pencil in Rue Bonaparte
Lancome Hypnose Doll Lashes Mascara
By Terry Rouge Terrybly in Bimbo Brown
Eh, I don’t know about this look. I wanted to use some white and some black and my new NARS lippie… but I’m not sure that it popped as much as I would have liked it to:
Diorskin Nude Foundation in 5.1
Rock & Republic Tinted Illuminizer
NARS Orgasm Blush
Rock & Republic Eyeshadow in Tribal (brows)
NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk (lashline to browbone)
Chanel Illusion d’Ombre in Mirifique (lid/waterline)
Armani Eyes To Kill Silk Eyeshadow in #7 (inner corner)
Make Up For Ever Smoky Black Lash Mascara
NARS Lipstick in Afghan Red
As promised, here are the swatches of the Rock & Republic Tinted Illuminizer in Roxanne:
Totally blended out, it gives the skin a lovely ‘glow’ without going shiny or glittery. I really like this stuff. Had there been another one on the site, I would have totally gotten a backup.
I also got the only pressed powder they had left (in the color Velvet), which is too dark to use regularly on my skin, but works perfectly as a contour:
See? I can totally use it on clients with a warmer skin tone, and on lighter skin tones it’ll do nicely as a contour.
I got both for a grand total of $20. Totally worth it.
It is SUCH a shame that Rock & Republic cosmetics didn’t catch on. I took part in the last massive sale (60% off) and got the tinted Illuminizer in Roxanne:
OMG is all I have to say. I thought it would be bogus… but it’s NOT. Roxanne is a dead ringer for my medium toned skin. And the shimmer is only really obvious under a flash. I wore it today and was blown away by the medium coverage and ‘light reflecting’ effect of this product. Even on my oily skin, it held beautifully.
I swatched it… but accidentally erased the pictures! Boo! I’ll take them again tonight and put them up. If you ever get the chance to try this stuff, I think it’s worth it.
Because there are no longer Rock& Republic counters (they did a short stint at Nordstrom), it’s impossible to test this first. Personally, I guessed at my color (and totally lucked out).
Swatches tonight… promise!
