Professional Grade: Alakazia Fashion + Art Happening

In about 24 hours, designer extraordinaire Alakazia is taking over a fabulous space in Downtown LA. First there was a text, then a phone call… then plans to bring it all together. And would I please handle the beauty aspect …?… and then there was something about  me deciding that the event would not be complete without HABIBI for the party…

So, I am Beauty Director of this fantastic show (I predict it will be fantastic, and that is that). That means directing models, makeup artists, hair stylists… and designing the ‘look’ that that models will sport during the show.

Rehearsal was Saturday:

The models are fabulous. They put up with Alakazia directing, and me yelling out cues on when and where to walk… and to some degree ‘how’ to walk (this ain’t my first time at the rodeo folks). They nodded, smiled, and shimmied down that runway like pros. I was really happy by the end of the day.

We have one more rehearsal… and then showtime!
Beauty-wise, the look is pretty clear. I know what he wants, and I’ve taken his needs and interpreted them in terms of makeup and hair.

*cracks knuckles*

I can do this.

Somewhere along the way I found 10 minutes to slap on some makeup. Now, if I look tired, it’s because I am.

I’ve misplaced at least a dozen  hours of sleep, and I’m trying to figure out where they went.

No matter. The show must go on!

Professional Grade: Eastern Inspiration

I recently declared myself Key Makeup Artist for a fashion show/benefit (Hey Tara, Dari & Bianca!) and set out to design a ‘Geisha Inspired’ look that we could do quickly and efficiently. Here is the idea realized:

I’m pretty sure Dari did this makeup. This girl is naturally Blonde. I wanted a strong brow and a strong lip, with highlight through the center of the face. We were given wigs to complete the look.

Now, all of the pictures that I took of the models came out a MESS. So I won’t be able to share more  photos until they’re published.

I would like to send out a special THANK YOU  to Dari, Bianca and Tara. Everyone worked really hard to get the makeup right and get those wigs to stay on! I really appreciate it. I only got to do one model (because I got pulled to do the makeup for two designers and someone’s husband), but I still had a lot of fun. And it really couldn’t have been done without the other artists. Thank you everyone!

Professional Grade: BlacMera Fashion Show at Agenda Loft

Sometimes it’s a BEAST trying to track down the work you’ve done. I got a last minute call from a promotions company (Hey Anna!) to do makeup for the recent BlacMera Fashion Show, at Agenda Loft in Downtown Los Angeles. By the time I got there, only one model hadn’t been done, so I did her makeup. Here she is:

I have been all over Google trying to find shots of the show. All I could find was wireimage (and anyone who knows anything about that site knows getting pictures from there is next to impossible). FINALLY, I found shots on Splash Magazine’s website. So, Thanks Splash!
Here are a few shots from the rest of the show:

A Night Out with Kevan Hall

I’m just getting back from the show … I wanted to share pictures! Keep in  mind, I am NOT a photographer. But I did my best:

My wretched photography skills don’t even remotely do these gowns justice… they were STUNNING. Smashbox did the makeup. They wanted me to come in and do hair (that’s what I was told anyway)… Ummmm… NO. I really don’t like doing hair. I’ll do it if I have to, but never for fashion shows. I’m not good enough for all that, and the truth is I really don’t want to. No matter. The folks behind these looks did an amazing job!

That’s it! I’m off to bed… early day tomorrow. Ciao for now!
