Beauty By Night (PM Skin Care Routine)

I’ve been getting a lot of emails asking about my skin, and specifically… my skin care routine. I’ve made no secret of the fact that I have acne prone and oily skin (and some of you have seen the photographic evidence), and that keeping it under control is a daily exercise.

Day or night, I never make a move without my Clarisonic. I know that a lot of people use this device to help remove their makeup. I would never. I just think it cuts down the effectiveness of the ‘deep clean.’ I always remove my makeup first, with a remover oil or cleansing water. THEN I pump a little face cleanser on the Clarisonic, and deep clean  my skin.

I took this picture of my bare skin after removing makep and using the Clarisonic. I purposely took the picture at night, before beginning the moisturizing routine.
My daytime routine has almost never changed… Habibi Oatmeal & Peppermint Wash and Moisturizer, and sunscreen. I did change my sunscreen for a stronger version at the beginning of summer. I now use Sunday Riley Cashmere SPF 30.

But at night, I tend to layer. And every few months, I alter those layers a bit because my skin adapts… and just like a workout plateau, I have to shake things up to continue progress.

So I start with Habibi Oatmeal & Peppermint Face Wash and Moisturizer, then I follow with Ren Bio Retinoid Anti Ageing Concentrate.
This is the strangest little miracle product for me. I press half a dropperful into my skin and give it about 5 minutes or so to sink in. It has a slick feeling, but absorbs very nicely. Normally, I’ll brush my teeth and floss while I’m letting it absorb.

Then I seal it with this little concoction:

I use half a fingerful of Koh Gen Do Oriental Plants balm, and one pump of M Steves Rose Hip Seed Oil Boost. If it’s really hot and my skin is in the mood to reject anything too oily, then I just use the M Steves. But if it’s feeling particularly dry and I know that I need a nice dose of moisture to work through the night, then I’ll mix the two.

I constantly pay attention to my skin. I know that its needs change with weather, hormonal changes, mood, circumstance (lack of sleep, stress, ect). So although my basics always stay the same, I’ll switch up by adding or subtracting ‘boosts’ or helpers along the way.

I’ve kept this routine pretty much through the summer. Although it’s hot as all get out, I still moisturize my skin at night. Even oily skin needs moisture. And as I get older, I’ve found that I need more moisture at night. Hopefully, this helps answer questions about  my skin care routine. Ciao for now!

Summer Essentials: My Favorite Things (Skin)

Hey guys,

I thought I’d share the products that I’m currently using to keep my skin under control this summer. In addition to skin care, I’m also using products to ‘trick’ my skin into behaving properly and looking its absolute best.

From the top:

CLEANSING…

My skin has been SO ANNOYED this summer! I can’t use anything with any potential irritants in it, like my regular Oatmeal/Peppermint face wash. The tea tree has become irritating, and it’s causing my skin to overproduce oil to compensate. Boo! So, head to toe (even on my face with the Clarisonic) I’ve been using the Habibi Baby Hair & Body Shampoo. So far… so good.

You can get the cleanser at: http://habibibody.com/

EXFOLIATING…

EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. This little device has really done wonders for my skin. I swear by it.

There are a ton of places that sell Clarisonic, including Space NK http://www.spacenk.com/ and the Clarisonic website http://clarisonic.com/

MOISTURIZING…

Same with the moisturizing. I’ve decided that less is more this summer, so I’m just slathering this on my damp skin (face included) after a shower and pat dry. It’s lighter than my regular go-to moisturizer (body balm), so it absorbs quickly and I can get dressed with no issues.

You can get this moisturizer at: http://habibibody.com/

SUNSCREEN…

If I’m going to  be outside, then this goes on with my regular moisturizer. It’s a little ‘white’ when you first put it on… so I really work it in with the moisturizer until it disappears.

You can get Natura Bisse products from Space NK at http://www.spacenk.com/

I’m not sure if they do international shipping… but there are a ton of places to buy Natura Bisse products.

BODY GLOW…

This probably qualifies as makeup, but I use it as part of my skin-routine, so it’ll go in this category. I LOVE this stuff! It’s supposed to be a tan intensifier (not that I need one), but that’s not what I use it for. This ‘dry’ oil goes on all the parts of me that are going to be exposed (even blended down with a brush under my chin and on the neck) so that my skin glows. Plus, it smells like HEAVEN. I’ve gone through nearly an entire bottle… I’ll need to get another one soon.

You can get the Guerlain dry shimmer oil from Sephora http://sephora.com/

That’s my regular ‘skin’ routine for the summer.

Product Review: Clarisonic

Okay…

It’s been about a month since I started using the Clarisonic Cleansing device. I don’t use any of the cleansers that it came with. I make and use my own. I use the Clarisonic at least once a day… sometimes twice a day.

I got the ‘Plus’ version of the device, because it seemed like it was worth the money. For $30 more than the Classic version, you get two more speeds and a body brush head. I’ll take it.

I learned the hard way to read the instructions on this thing: You have to let it charge for 24 hours before you can even use it. And I’ve heard that some folks charge their device twice a year… but I find that I have to charge mine every 10 days to two weeks. That may have something to do with frequency of use.

From the first time I used it… I noticed a difference. It makes your skin REALLY.SMOOTH. Like… really. I couldn’t stop touching my face (which is probably a bad thing because I’m prone to breakouts). It’s supposed to clean your skin 5 times more than with regular cleansing (using your hands) and help boost the effectiveness of your skin care products. I don’t know about all of that.

Here’s what I can tell you for sure. The first week… every hidden blackhead and clogged pore on my face decided to show its ugly face. I had the WORST breakouts the first week… stuff just came to the surface like you would not believe. But, as quickly as they surfaced… they washed away. Typical life span for my breakouts is about a week. These disappeared in about two days. I feel like the Clarisonic speeds up the healing process for this sort of thing. Good news for someone like me… because the wind blows and I have a breakout. Good to know that I can speed up recovery. It also helps a LOT with hyperpigmentation. If your breakouts leave you with nasty little marks, the Clarisonic will help them fade faster.

Second and third weeks were good for me… but the forth week Mother Nature came calling and my hormones went berserk… and I had another breakout. Now I’m in my fifth week, and the breakouts are over. My skin is back to being smooth and fabulous.

I like this device a lot. I thought it was a lot of hype, but it’s really helped my skin look its absolute best. I love the fact that you don’t have to use a specific cleanser with it. The device works ‘with’ you and your individual skin care needs. I highly recommend it.

This thing is NOT cheap. So keep that in mind. The Clarisonic Mia is 149.00, The Clarisonic Classic is 195.00, and the Clarisonic Plus is 225.00. But it’s an investment that I think your skin will thank you for. If you’re not prone to any kind of skin issues, this will not be neccessary for you. But for those of us who are on a constant quest for great skin, this is a good tool to have in your arsenal.

I’m very interested in paying this device forward. So I’m going to do so in the very near future.

WHEN THE BLOG HITS 2,000 SUBSCRIBERS, I WILL GIVE A CLARISONIC MIA AWAY.

There will be no need to do anything beyond be a public follower. Everyone will be entered one time. I’ll send everyone’s names through the random generator and announce the winner. Good Luck Everyone!
