Drink Up: Spin Spin Sugar…

…Cane. Juice, that is.

I have this lovely friend, who gets really Really REALLY excited when she discovers something new.

Yesterday, she discovered Sugar Cane Juice. She calls me in her high pitched excited voice, talking a mile a minute, tumbling and combining words (that really shouldn’t be combined) and talking about this fabulous elixir that she tried. I interjected when she took a breath, and agreed that sugar cane juice is indeed wonderful (I had my first drink at 10 years old, when our Puerto Rican neighbor showed us how to pound sugar cane to get the juice), and said that she certainly couldn’t do any damage by drinking it. She was worried about her sugar levels (so was I). Turns out, she’s just fine if she consumes the juice.

Health Benefits

As raw sugar contains no simple sugars, sugarcane juice has a relatively low glycemic index (the effect a carbohydrate has on blood glucose levels), which keeps the body’s metabolism healthy and helps maintain a healthy body weight. Roughly one teaspoon of raw sugar contains only eleven calories. The natural minerals and vitamins found in sugarcane are exceedingly valuable. Phosphorus, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium. Sugarcane is an alkalizing substance, and therefore is beneficial at fighting cancer. Studies have shown that it has proven an effective at fighting prostate and breast cancer cells. Furthermore, it is exceptionally beneficial for rehydration as it not only cools the body but also energizes with a high quantity of useful carbohydrates and protein. The nutrients found in sugarcane are beneficial to inner organ functioning, including the kidneys, heart, brain and sex organs.

Sugarcane and Diabetes

  • As it contains no simple sugars, sugarcane can be enjoyed by diabetics without worry. In diabetic and weight loss experimentation, the replacing of raw sugarcane juice for refined sugar and other sweeteners has shown positive results not only in stable glucose levels, but also in weight loss.

So I went to the Farmer’s Market and found a lovely lady who sells Sugar Cane Juice, and got her one to enjoy, along with a chlorophyll concoction (with lime) which is really good for us to share. She was over the MOON. 😀

Now we’re blending all manner of Sugar Cane Juice with everything under the sun. Sometimes we hit, and sometimes (I’m gonna learn to just leave the Anise alone) we really miss. 😀

She’s on the right track with substituting Sugar Cane Juice for anything that might prove more detrimental, so she’s got my full support with that one.

Now, if I can just get her to stop wearing Capri Pants…
